Technology

Magik Eye's innovative technical approach to depth perception has major advantages over alternate existing methods

  • Smaller and cheaper processor
  • Works outdoors in sunlight
  • Works in the dark
  • 180° field of view
  • Single sensor for both Long and Short Range measurements
  • Not dependent on surface texture
  • 5x fewer sensors required to cover a given area

Alternate Existing Approaches to Depth Perception

Stereo Imaging

It is possible to calculate depth by comparing images from two cameras. However, there are major downsides to a stereoscopic approach:

  • Severely limited field of view
  • Good lighting is required
  • Surfaces must be textured
  • Processor Intensive

Structured Light

It is possible to calculate depth by projecting a pattern and measuring distortion. However, there are downsides to using structured light:

  • Narrow field of view
  • Limited range
  • Works poorly outdoors
  • Processor Intensive

Time of Flight

It is possible to calculate depth by measuring the time it takes for light to reflect. However, there are downsides to using Time of flight:

  • Narrow field of view
  • High cost electronics
  • Inaccurate at short distances
